DPE Update in 2026: A More Favorable Calculation for Electrically Heated Homes

Starting January 1st, 2026, a significant update to the Energy Performance Certificate (DPE) will take effect in France. The calculation method will be revised to correct a long-standing imbalance that was unfavorable to properties heated with electricity.
Until now, the primary energy conversion factor applied to electricity was particularly penalizing, often placing electrically heated homes in lower energy classes, even when their actual energy consumption was reasonable. This methodological bias, widely criticized, will now be corrected in line with European recommendations.
As a result, this change will rebalance the way energy performance is assessed, and many properties—especially recent or renovated buildings—could see an improvement in their DPE rating.
Why Update Your DPE?
As a reminder, a DPE is valid for 10 years, but with this upcoming change, it may be strategically worthwhile for sellers of estates, homes, or heritage buildings heated with electricity to renew their energy assessment from 2026 onwards. A better energy rating can become a real asset in property valuation and increase the attractiveness of your listing.
