The wine region of Anjou-Saumur is a historic land of production of great white wines, dry, mellow, quiet and sparkling. The region includes 32 appellations, it is the third largest French vineyard in AOP with 20 000 hectares. The AOP Anjou and Saumur are located between the AOP Muscadet and the AOP Touraine wines.
Chenin is the historical grape variety, which produces expressive dry white wines. The other most common varieties are Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Grolleau Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The price of land per hectare is very variable according to the AOP.
The diversity of terroirs makes it possible to produce beautiful red wines such as Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame, Saumur and Saumur Champigny, which grow on calcareous soils, while the AOC Anjou and Anjou Villages grow on slaty soils.
In Rochefort-sur-Loire, two appellations of sweet white wines have received the high classification of Grand Cru (Quarts-de-Chaume) and Premier Cru (the Coteau-du-Layon-thatch appellation). The land is rare and prices high.
